Another reality show?!
TV used to be a way to escape into something exciting at the end of a day. Now it seems life is so exciting, we need to escape into doldrums of reality.
Or are our lives so banal, that this plastic version of ‘reality’ is more exiting?
How utterly depressing.
— Can of Worms opens well (SMH) http://bit.ly/nKcRwT an article seemingly written to celebrate the ratings of reality tv. (An an aside, looking at Twitter, seems many were watching Can of Worms incredulously to see if it was possible it would stay as bad as it started, and it did.)
How can we grow if we are not inspired? Does a person begin the process of learning to think if they are not encouraged to? Do many?
Is it enough that these reality tv shows inspire us in what we are content to have as our everyday: mixing of spices, selecting the best paint for that tricky exposed deck corner, how to apply the perfect natural ‘just stepped off the beach’ makeup for those runway moments.
Not that I suggest TV should be largely responsible for educating. It couldn’t hurt to have that as a part of the objective though. To me, what’s on the box is representative of interests of the masses, and if this is the case, it seems a sad state of affairs. Where is the variation? The real ‘real’. Is life too real? We need fake real?
Maybe I will be surprised. Maybe sometime, the audience as one will decide to spurn our current imagination drain TV altogether, a silent protest in unknowing support of creativity.
I am somewhat comforted, even with the lack of support, we are not living in a creative wasteland. I look forward to the day our creative types are sought after, here, to challenge and enrich our population.
